Adani Power’s $800 Million Debt Crisis: Bangladesh Electricity Dispute
Adani Power (NSE: ADANIPOWER), a company of the Adani Group, is continuously supplying electricity to Bangladesh amid political upheaval.
But, in the meantime, the increasing dues on the company are becoming a matter of concern. On average, this electricity bill is close to $ 90-110 million every month.
Adani Power is supplying electricity here under an earlier agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
However, a news channel said in a report quoting sources that the company is currently engaged in finding a solution to this. If the dues are not paid on time, it may be difficult for Adani Power to supply electricity to Bangladesh.
Adani Power is facing problems in paying the dues, coal, spares, and other commodities for power supply and plant operation.
Bangladesh currently has long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with 4 coal-based power generators. The firms are Rampal, Payra, Matarbari, and Barisal Electric Power.
However, these facilities are not operational unless the Bangladesh government provides coal to them via US dollar credit letters or US dollar payments.
On the other side, Adani Power supplies electricity to Bangladesh via an ultra-supercritical power plant (1,600 MW ) located in Godda, Jharkhand.
There is a dedicated transmission corridor for this. The plant started full operations in July 2023. Imported coal is used in this plant. This plant supplies 7% to 10% of Bangladesh’s electricity needs.
Recent media reports have said that Adani Power owes up to $800 million. This report is quoted as saying by the recently appointed governor of Bangladesh Bank, Ahsan Mansur.
