Voice chat management using artificial intelligence and its effects on GTA Online

With the GTA Online Chop Shop update in December 2023, Rockstar has expanded the AI voice chat moderation feature it introduced previously and has begun implementing it on consoles as well. Currently, 50% of all GTA Online sessions will be moderated on PS5 and Xbox Series On a computer, this applies to all sessions.

The move aims to address toxic behavior in multiplayer, with ToxMod, an AI voice control tool, expected to recognize and flag hate speech. This can include racist, sexist, transphobic speech, or any generally hateful or offensive remarks.

Rockstar Games has not revealed exactly how it will deal with those who engage in hate speech. However, violators are expected to receive warnings for committing an offence, and repeat offenders may have their accounts permanently banned. Of course, there is also the possibility that violators will be banned immediately without any warning.

It’s natural for GTA Online players to wonder if voice moderation also applies to “friendly trash talk.” Rockstar has already taken this into consideration, and here’s what they said:

“While there is no place in our community for player-to-player harassment, we do allow friendly competitive conversation. Our moderation is guided by Rockstar Games’ current Code of Conduct and takes into account the context of the conversation and other contexts.”

However, players should be careful about what they say when using in-game voice chat. Because it’s moderated by AI, there’s no way to be sure what will be considered hate speech and what will be classified as “friendly competitive speech.” You can also choose to disable the voice chat feature from the settings menu.

The fact that some conversations will be recorded for moderation has raised privacy concerns in the community. Rockstar addressed this with the following statement:

“Protecting the privacy of our players has always been a priority. When necessary for player safety, some audio conversations may be securely recorded and retained for a limited time. They will never be sold or rented to third parties.”

As revealed by Rockstar Support, voice chat moderation is still in the testing phase, and the feature is expected to be fully implemented in 2024.

AI voice chat management went into effect for the first time on October 3, 2023, as reported by Tez2, a popular GTA Online insider. They’ve also added two new reporting options – phone texts and emails. However, this update was specifically intended for the PC version of the game.

With this feature, Rockstar has begun recording all audio conversations for moderation and review, most of which will be done using artificial intelligence software. Some other insiders claimed that the game will listen to microphone audio even on the loading screens and main menu.

In other news, GTA 5 actor Ned Luke was beaten while streaming the game live on his YouTube channel before New Year’s Day.
