‘Still crying’: Madhu Chopra regrets sending daughter Priyanka Chopra to boarding school, calls actress ‘fearless mother’
Priyanka Chopra Jonas is raising her daughter Malti Marie Jonas as a “superwoman”. Actor Madhu Chopra’s mother recently revealed how Priyanka is raising her son to be a strong person and also revealed that after becoming a grandmother to Malti, she has forgotten her own children. During the conversation, he also talked about his decision to raise Priyanka.
In a recent interview with India Today, Madhu said that Priyanka is “fearless” as a mother and is “not afraid.” He said, “He gives his son a lot of freedom to be alone.” One piece of parenting advice Madhu gave to Priyanka was “don’t twist the word no. Explain it to her, she will understand. Don’t just say no. That’s the advice I gave her.”
More than a mother, Madhu enjoys the role of a grandmother and loves to hold Malti in her arms. “I forgot I had my children.”
If given the chance to change some aspects of Priyanka’s upbringing, Madhu Chopra would not send her to boarding school. “I still cry when I think about it and I still feel guilty. My mistake was that I sent him to boarding school. Not the best decision in my life,” he said.
Earlier in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Madhu had said that she had put Priyanka in a boarding school without her husband’s permission. “When he was seven years old, I enrolled him in a boarding school at home without my husband’s permission, without my family’s permission. I didn’t punish Priyanka anymore. Those four years were very difficult.”
Priyanka said that when she was sent to boarding school, she felt “abandoned”. She told Elle, “What I remember most vividly is the feeling of being left behind—a feeling that lasted a long time. I didn’t understand why they kicked me out… I didn’t understand why (my mother) couldn’t visit anymore.”
