She has been involved in various political parties throughout her career, including the Social Democratic Party, All Nigeria Peoples Party, Peoples Democratic Party, and All Progressives Congress before joining the Labour Party in 2022.

Ireti Kingibe Ireti Kingibe was born on June 2, 1954, in Benin City, Edo State. She is the daughter of Chief Alfred Rewane, a prominent businessman and politician who was assassinated in 1995. She is also the niece of Chief Anthony Enahoro, a nationalist and pro-democracy activist.

Ireti had her elementary education at Emotan Preparatory School in Benin City. She then completed her secondary studies at Queen’s College Lagos, one of the most prestigious girls’ schools in Nigeria. She was a brilliant student who excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities.

Ireti proceeded to the United States for her tertiary education. She attended Washington Irving High School in New York City for a year before enrolling at the University of Minnesota. She graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1976, becoming one of the few female engineers in Nigeria at the time.

Ireti Kingibe started her professional journey as a quality control engineer at Bradley Precast Concrete Inc. in the United States from 1978 to 1979. Subsequently, she transitioned to the Minnesota Department of Transportation Design unit, where she served as an engineer from 1979 to 1991.

Ireti returned to Nigeria for her one-year mandatory national service between 1981 and 1982. She was posted to work as a project supervisor with the Nigerian Air Force base in Ikeja, Lagos.

Ireti joined the New Nigeria Construction Company, Kaduna, in 1982 as a planning engineer. In 1985, she left to join Belsam Limited as a consultant, expanding her expertise in the field. Later, from 1990 to 1994, she assumed the role of regional engineer at Lodigiani Nigeria Limited, Lagos.

Ireti currently works as a senior partner with Kelnic Associates, Abuja, an architectural firm that she co-founded with her late husband, Baba Gana Kingibe, a former secretary to the government of the federation.

IIreti Kingibe’s political career began in 1990 when she joined the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) as an adviser to the national chairman. She was the FCT senatorial candidate for the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) in 2003, but she lost the election.

Ireti Kingibe defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2006, but she left in 2014 to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). She ran for the senatorial seat under APC in 2015, but she later withdrew.

Ireti Kingibe joined the Labour Party in 2022 and became the FCT senatorial candidate for the 2023 Nigerian general elections. She won the election with 52% of the votes, defeating the incumbent senator, Philips Tanimu Aduda, of the PDP. She is the chairman of the Senate committee on women affairs. She pledged to donate her basic salary to a special fund to tackle infrastructural deficits in the rural communities within the FCT.
