Ryan Haines / Android Authority

The age of constant reform is over. As more and more mobile phone users wait three years or more to upgrade their daily drivers, their fight to stay in the limelight and capture a share of the shrinking global market is growing stronger by the day.

With the line between success and failure narrower than ever, some established companies have stuck to their tried and true plans, while others have tried to break away from the pack by offering a new take on the smartphone formula. In 2023, the latter camp consisted of phones that leaned on new technology or offered the latest innovations at affordable prices. And even though some of the big names and popular artists who continue to lead the popular charts have become a little more popular, that hasn’t stopped the best phones from getting better, or the crowd chasing them. hungry.

But only one phone can stand out and claim the best phone of 2023. You’ve already crowned your hero in our Reader’s Choice awards (scroll down to see your picks!), but now it’s our turn. . Join us as we run down the phones that hit our top five and name the device that took the top spot Android AuthorityEditor’s Choice award for the best smartphone of 2023.

How we chose our winner

First of all, it is important to take care of the house.

Every year, we need to rethink the meaning of “good” at that time. Pa Android Authority, when judging the quality of the phone we take into account everything from the benchmark, the basic principles, and the guarantee of the change of principle, to the less obvious aspects such as photography, UI, and special software. Our expert testers spend hours trying to decide everything about each new device, and while everyone will have their own likes and dislikes – we’re only human, after all – we’re always sure to lay the groundwork. principles that explain what it means to be the best.

For the third year running, it’s the Pixel that takes the top prize. And as of 2022, the Pro version was a standout in Google’s phone lineup.

In our review, we anointed the Pixel 8 Pro as Google’s most complete smartphone to date, praising the device’s AI capabilities, continued excellence in photography (now with enhanced video, to boot), and its industry-leading software standards. Apple on notice.

Google may be paying $100 more than the original, but the Pixel 8 Pro got its best price and improved the Pixel’s beauty, and our extensive testing showed a clear improvement in its Tensor chipset. And what’s more, it will be good for the entire seven years of its support period, during which it will receive software updates, security patches, and Google’s patented Feature Drops.

The truest realization of Google’s smartphone dreams we’ve seen so far, the Pixel 8 Pro is the winner of our Editors’ Choice award for the year. However, unlike 2022 where the Pixel 7 Pro was the winning story that ran away with the majority of votes, the Pixel 8 Pro won with only one vote. One! So, which phone did you miss a bit?

To say that the OnePlus-OPPO merger has been divisive would be an understatement, and for a while, it looks like it could spell doom for the brand to settle down. But as the lines between the two continue to blur, we’re starting to see gear that has the spirit of the “string killer,” combined with the polish of his company that was born. For example, our 2023 winner, the smart OnePlus Open.

The OnePlus Open isn’t just like an OPPO phone, it is and OPPO phone – OPPO Find N3 refurbished with a recovery program. But releasing it under the OnePlus banner means we got our hands on one of OPPO’s flagships outside of China. The expanded system also included the US market, where it started competing with a price tag of $1,699, but with ongoing sales dropping the price to $1,499.

It’s not a small change, but it’s a much more affordable option compared to competing desktop folders like the Galaxy Z Fold or Pixel Fold. It didn’t skimp on quality for the price, and it also managed to produce a few paper-like creases, including…

While it couldn’t dethrone the champion, the Shenzhen brand deserves every bit of credit for coming so close. OnePlus is dead. Long live OnePlus.

The first foldable phone with great features

The OnePlus Open brings what could be the best hardware on a foldable phone and enough software smarts to turn heads. It combines the latest with some of OPPO’s most rigorous testing to create a foldable phone that feels like the first attempt. Add in a competitive price, and OnePlus Open can give other folders a run for their money.

Third place: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The durable, powerful Galaxy S23 Ultra has been the flagship of the Android brand. An additional year added polish to Samsung’s Galaxy Note-inspired vision of its Ultra-phone, and we deservedly gave it five out of five stars in our review. It’s about as bad as we’ve seen from a premium phone, with stellar cameras, amazing performance, timeless design, and support for tons of apps.

To be successful, you have to hit very well. The Galaxy S23 Ultra may not have made it onto our list (spoiler: it made it onto yours), but it still holds its position as king.

Powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the smaller models in the series, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offers greater storage capacity and a larger 200MP camera. S Pen support and a 6.8-inch display make the Ultra ideal for those who write on the go.

Fourth place: Google Pixel 7a

Well, here’s a surprise. Where we’ve seen the vanilla Pixel take the top five spots alongside the Pro lineup, this year the Big G display has been joined by a true Pixel. Maybe the Pixel 8’s price hike is to blame (it’s still an amazing phone!), or maybe the upgrades we’ve seen on the A-series — especially the addition of wireless charging and 90Hz refresh — earned it a top five spot. Whatever the reason, the Pixel 7a is a great choice for budget buyers who don’t want to spend $500.

Fifth place: Motorola Razr Plus

The nostalgia-baiting series that introduced the foldable clamshell has been covered by the Galaxy Z Flip. But not this year!

The Nothing Phone 2 and the Galaxy S23 each narrowly missed out on fifth place by just one spot (better luck next year!), but the Motorola Razr Plus surprised us a bit with that big cover and its sleek, dust-proof design. In what was generally a good year for Motorola flagships with the Razr (2023), Edge Plus (2023), and the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, the Razr Plus had some limitations.

Lighter, sleeker, and infinitely more flexible, the Motorola Razr Plus (2023) opens up to reveal a display that looks seamless, clear, and bright. Also with the largest screen on a foldable phone of this form factor, the Razr Plus is giving a big competition to its competitors.
