Jay Lang is a 24-year-old man from Essex, England, who was sentenced to 21 years in prison for posing as a 16-year-old girl online and blackmailing dozens of teenage boys into sending him sexual images or money. He used the alias “Chloe” to contact his victims, who were aged between 11 and 16, on social media apps such as Snapchat and Instagram.

Jay Lang’s crime spree began in April 2018 when he created a fake profile of a 16-year-old girl named Chloe on social media apps such as Snapchat and Instagram. He then contacted teenage boys who were aged between 11 and 16 and initiated sexualised conversations with them. He asked them to send him pictures or videos of themselves performing sexual acts or posing naked.

He then used these images to blackmail them into sending more images or money. He threatened to expose them to their friends, family or school if they did not comply. He also asked some of his victims to perform sexual acts on themselves or others while he watched via video call.

Lang’s criminal activities came to light in November 2021 when one of his victims reported him to the police. The police seized electronic devices from his home and found hundreds of gigabits of phone data that contained evidence of his interactions with his victims. They also identified the social media accounts he had used to contact them.

Jay was arrested and charged with 46 counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, causing or inciting child sexual exploitation, arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, causing or inciting child prostitution or pornography and blackmail. He pleaded guilty to all the charges at Basildon Combined Court on Friday, September 22, 2023.

He was sentenced to 21 years in prison with an extended licence period of six years by Judge Samantha Cohen. He will serve a minimum of 14 years in jail before being eligible for release. His name will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life.
