The four people were caught by the Delhi Police Cyber Unit 10 days ago, following the action of the authorities. Personal information, including Aadhaar and passport, is said to have been leaked from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data bank and sold on the dark web.

According to police officials, the breach was first discovered in October, and sensitive information was made available for sale on illegal online platforms.

In what is said to be the “biggest” data leak in the country, details of over 81.5 crore Indians, allegedly from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), have been leaked online, according to a News18 report. The report said that the leak was initially spotted by Resecurity, an American cyber security and intelligence agency.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore later wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi exposing the security and integrity of Indian citizens after a data leak alert from an American cyber security firm.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Tagore said the shocking revelation has raised questions about the security and integrity of citizens’ information.

“According to their report, the personal information of 815 million Indian citizens, including Aadhaar numbers and passport details, has been compromised and is being sold on the dark web. Public information,” the Congress MP said in his letter.

“The fact that this data is being sold for just $80,000 is not only a serious violation of privacy but also a matter of national security. The most surprising thing is that the data appears to be correct, which shows that there is no serious problem in our data protection methods,” he added.

In July, Gokhale, the TMC’s national spokesperson, said that CoWin’s Covid-19 vaccine tracking system had been breached, with details of political leaders available on the Telegraph. He shared footage of the breach on his official X account (formerly Twitter), which included Aadhaar card numbers, as well as the gender, date of birth and vaccination sites of senior leaders.
